Stu has been in law practice for over 32 years, concentrating most of his practice in the fields of energy, public utility, regulatory, administrative and appellate law..

Stu's credits include:

  • Stu was Counsel for the Midwest Gas Users' Association FERC "Tight Sands" complaint against Williams Natural Gas Company that resulted in over $400 million refunds and other benefits to natural gas users in Williams' service area.
  • Represented the Kansas City Industrial Intervenors in the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station rate cases in Kansas and Missouri and was instrumental in developing the compromise that resulted in the favorable settlement that case.
  • Following FERC Order 436, Stu was instrumental in facilitating open-access interstate natural gas transportation on Williams Natural Gas and local distributors in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.
  • Stu served as a leader of the Missouri Public Service Commission's Natural Gas Transportation Task Force and has been a requested speaker at numerous meetings of various energy and utility regulatory groups
  • Invited member, Legal Committee, Missouri Public Service Commission Retail Electric Competition Legal Task Force.
  • Invited member of the Restructuring Task Force and Mission and Role Task Force for the Iowa Utilities Board.
  • Member, Administrative Council, Missouri Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee, 
  • President, Midwest Chapter, Energy Bar Association, 2002-2003
  • Member, Professional Editorial Board, Energy Law Journal
  • Stu is listed in the Who's Who Worldwide Registry of Business Leaders and in Who's Who in American Law

Stu earned his Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Missouri School of Law where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif, was Note and Comment Editor for the Missouri Law Review (1973-1974) and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternities.  Stu's undergraduate degree (B.S. in Education) was earned from Central Missouri State University in 1969 where he received the George H. Charno Award as the outstanding male graduate for that year, was elected as student body president in 1968 and was one of the founders and charter members of Missouri Theta chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Stu is the firm's "techno-lawyer."  He is familiar and conversant with the integration of computer and technology in the legal practice and has frequently been requested to advise clients on computer and data processing contracts.  Stu served as Regional Vice President of the VS Legal Users' Group, served for nearly a decade on the national Board of Directors and for two years was National President of LawNet, Inc., an association of some 300 of the largest law firms in the United Sates, western Europe and Australia/New Zealand addressing issues of integration and utilization of computer and other technology in member law firms.

Stu is a member of the Missouri Bar, and the bars of the Federal District Courts for the Western District of Missouri, and the District of Kansas, the United States Courts of Appeal for the 5th, 8th, 10th, 11th and District of Columbia Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.
